FMIS Ethics approval for your research

How to apply for ethics approval from Te K膩hui Manu T膩iko, Faculty of M膩ori and Indigenous Studies' research ethics committee, including required documents, process steps and timeframes.

If you are planning to undertake any research and/or related activities and are a staff member or student in the Faculty of M膩ori and Indigenous Studies (FMIS), you will need to seek ethics approval from Te K膩hui Manu T膩iko.

Te K膩hui Manu T膩iko

Te K膩hui Manu T膩iko is the FMIS Human Research Ethics Committee.

The term 'k膩hui' in M膩ori is used to describe a flock and the term 'manu t膩iko' is used to describe the bird which acts as sentry or lookout for the whole flock. The committee members review and approve the ethical aspects of research methods.

The committee's authority comes from the University Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC).

If your research involves health topics or a health organisation, you must apply to the University HREC instead. This is a separate process.

Application process

Complete all relevant documents

- Consent form
- Information sheet
- Research letter
- Copy of interview questions, survey or questionnaire. A draft is fine.

The OneDrive folder has templates for all documents, along with a completed form for reference.
Submit your application

Have your supervisor to approve and sign your application (students only).

Ensure all documents are attached to the Qualtrics form.

Email committee chair to let them know you have submitted your application.
Review and outcome

Allow at least three weeks for your application to be reviewed. If the committee requires further information, they will email you.

Once review is completed, you will be contacted about the outcome and may be asked to carry out revisions. Send changes back to the Convenor, who will confirm whether approval has been granted.

Once approved you will receive an approval letter and a copy of your application.
