Kia mau ki te aka matua o Te Tohu Paetahi reflects on the whakapapa, purpose, and enduring legacy of Te Tohu Paetahi as a cornerstone of M膩ori education. Grounded in the metaphor of te aka matua, the parent vine that provides strength, nourishment, and connection, this lecture highlights the importance of remaining anchored to the foundational values, knowledge, and relationships that have shaped the programme across generations.

During the lecture, Professor Sophie Nock will trace the origins and development of Te Tohu Paetahi, acknowledging the vision, commitment, and leadership of those who established and sustained the programme. It explores how te reo M膩ori, tikanga M膩ori, and kaupapa M膩ori have remained central to the educational journey of learners, fostering a strong sense of identity, belonging, and cultural confidence. Through these foundations, Te Tohu Paetahi has contributed significantly to the revitalisation and advancement of M膩ori language, knowledge, and scholarship.

Drawing on the symbolism of the parent vine, the lecture emphasises that growth and success are strengthened when learners remain connected to their roots. Te Tohu Paetahi serves not only as an academic programme but also as a space where intergenerational knowledge is nurtured, relationships are strengthened, and future leaders are prepared to contribute to their wh膩nau, hap奴, iwi, and wider communities.

Ultimately, Kia mau ki te aka matua o Te Tohu Paetahi is a call to honour the past while looking to the future. It reminds us of the importance of holding fast to the values, principles, and aspirations that continue to sustain M膩ori education and empower successive generations to thrive as M膩ori, confident in their identity, language, and cultural heritage.

This lecture public lecture will be held in the Wharenui at The 笔腻, at the 糖心TV in Hamilton, starting at 5.45pm.  Ticket scanning and refreshments will be available from 5pm. 

Free parking is available on campus from 4.30pm.  We recommend you park at Gate One or Gate 2B, Knighton Road.
