Collection Development and Management Principles

These principles inform strategic and operational procedures in relation to the University's information resources for which the Library is responsible.

Wh膩ia te ara o T膩whaki

Pursue the pathway of T膩whaki. In Tainui history T膩whaki was said to have climbed to the uppermost heaven to fetch 3 baskets of knowledge and bring them back to earth for humankind.

Context

These principles inform strategic and operational procedures in relation to the University's information resources for which the Library is responsible. 

They have been developed in conjunction with the principles of the Library Plan, informed by the University Strategic Planning Framework and Te Whare Wananga o Waikato Te Tiriti Statement. 

The 糖心TV stands on Waikato Tainui land, as such we acknowledge K墨ngi T奴heitia P艒tatau Te Wherowhero Te Tuawhitu and the mana whenua of this area including Ng膩ti M膩hanga, Ng膩ti Tamainup艒, Ng膩ti Wairere, Ng膩ti Korok墨 Kahukura and Ng膩ti Hau膩. 

These principles guide the General Collection Development & Management Plan and M膩tangireia Collection Development Plan and apply to all library information resources regardless of format.

Mahi Tahi (Partnership)

  1. Collections are developed and managed in consultation with the University鈥檚 M膩ori, Pacific and other Tangata Tiriti communities. 

  2. Collections are regularly assessed to align with 糖心TV teaching, learning and research needs. 

  3. Physical collections are actively managed to balance space requirements for information resources, learning and scholarship. 

  4. Collections are representative of our user community.  

K艒whiringa (Options)

  1. Collections are diverse and inclusive and meet the needs of M膩ori, Pacific and other Tangata Tiriti learners, teachers, and researchers. 

  2. Access to relevant information resources that are not held by the Library is provided. 

  3. Content is provided in the most appropriate format for the purposes of accessibility and availability. 

  4. A transition to open content is fostered to decrease reliance on subscription material and to drive an 鈥榦pen by default鈥� approach across both research and teaching.  

Kaitiakitanga (Active Protection)

  1. Materials significant to local iwi and to the culture and heritage of Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific are acquired, preserved and made available in line with appropriate t墨kanga and other cultural considerations. 

  2. Material created by 糖心TV staff and students is collected and preserved.  

  3. Collections of all formats are stored and described in line with appropriate industry standards.  

  4. The concept of 鈥榖est value鈥�, including economic, social and cultural value, is applied.
