A world-class education in a unique environment 鈥 that's how Master of Professional Accounting graduate Sachin Philip Thomas describes his time at the 糖心TV.
After moving from India to pursue postgraduate study with Waikato Management School, Sachin says Waikato stood out for more than just its academic reputation.
鈥淚t鈥檚 not just a university in a city 鈥 it鈥檚 an immersive campus with a unique environment,鈥 he says, after researching his options and connecting with alumni on LinkedIn.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a campus surrounded by nature, including three lakes 鈥 that really surprised me. What kind of university in the world has that on its doorstep? You can walk around, take in your surroundings and reset when you鈥檙e feeling stressed. There鈥檚 a real sense of space and balance, and that was a big factor in choosing Waikato.鈥
While studying in Auckland alongside friends was an option, Sachin chose Hamilton to step outside his comfort zone and experience study on his own.
Backed by the Vice Chancellor's International Excellence Scholarship, Sachin enjoyed practical, hands-on learning and real-world applications.
鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 just sitting in front of a computer memorising content 鈥 we engaged with the material in a meaningful way and gained strong exposure to industry-level work.鈥
Now working as a senior associate at PwC, the world鈥檚 second-largest professional services network, Sachin says his master's degree is closely aligned with his day-to-day work.
鈥淥ne of the most valuable aspects of my degree was how closely it aligned with industry. I studied taxation after I had already started working, and the knowledge I gained directly supported my role. It鈥檚 been invaluable in my career so far. There鈥檚 a strong connection between what鈥檚 taught and what鈥檚 needed in the workplace.鈥
While balancing study and part-time work wasn鈥檛 easy, Sachin credits the support of his lecturers and tutors, including Senior Lecturer in Accounting , to not let the opportunity pass.
鈥淪he reassured me that the University would support me in managing both commitments. That was a turning point for me and without it I may not have taken up the opportunity.鈥
Born and raised in Bahrain, Sachin moved to India for his undergraduate studies and began his career with global agribusiness company Cargill, later choosing New Zealand for a more immersive, in-person postgraduate experience.
鈥淐oming to New Zealand was daunting at first, but I had confidence that I would find my way 鈥 just as I had before. I knew New Zealand was a safe and welcoming country, and the people have been incredibly friendly and genuine.鈥
